Top eight of women's volleyball in Rio Olympics comfirmed

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 14 -- The quarterfinal fixtures for the women's volleyball tournament at the Rio Olympic Games were confirmed on Sunday.

Host Brazil, who cruised into the quarterfinals without losing a singe set in five pool matches, will face World Cup winner China, while the United States, the top seed, play against Japan.

Two-time defending Olympic champions Brazil captured top place of Pool A by subduing Russia in straight sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 on Sunday.

Sheilla Castro had 18 points, including three aces, to lead the winning attack, followed by Natalia Pereira and Fabiana Claudino with 14 and 9, respectively. Russia's Nataliya Goncharova, Tatiana Kosheleva and Yana Shcherban finished with 19, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Brazil committed a couple of errors allowing Russia to even up the score at 23-all but recovered to claim the first set 25-23 on consecutive spikes by Castro and Claudino.

In the second set with the score evened at 15-15, Brazil put together a 4-point rally when Claudino had a spike and an ace. The Brazil then seal the set 25-21 with a spike from Sheilla.

The third set was more comfortable for the host as Castro committed three spikes in a row to gave Brazil an eight-point lead. They then finished the set 25-21 with a high-flying spike by Pereira.

Russia will clash with Serbia in another quarterfinals, the latter lost to the Netherlands 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 8-15 to rank third in the Pool B.

The Netherlands' opponent in the top eight will be South Korea, who held a 3-2 win-loss record in the Pool A.

The United States clinched pole position in Pool B with an undefeated 5-0 win-loss record after beating China 22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19.

"Japan knows us well and we know them well," said Kiraly, "It has been nerver ever easy to against Japan. They are the world best defense team. They are well coached and play very good volleyball techniquely. They play with high spirit which I am admired mostly."

Jordan Larson-Burbach scored 18 points for the United States, followed by Foluke Akinradewo and Kelly Murphy with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

China's Zhu Ting had a match-high 23 points and Hui Ruoqi finished with 14, including three blocks and two aces, but there is no other Chinese players who can reach the double digit during the one hour and 42 minutes game.

"If we want to advance into the top four, we have to play our best and I don't want to loss too much," said Lang Ping, the head coach of China, after the match.
