One member of the hugely popular boy band EXO has just taken on a side gig working for the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC). Zhang Yixing, the only Chinese member of the group, was recently announced as the publicity ambassador of CYLC's Hunan Committee.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Zhang said that this will be his first time working as a publicity ambassador, and he plans to dedicate himself to the youth league publicity demands, Hunan Daily reported.

This also marks the first time the CYLC Hunan Committee has invited a celebrity to serve as its ambassador, which could set a precedent for youth league committees nationwide, according to an anonymous CYLC Hunan Committee official.

“It is an innovative move by the CYLC to guide and serve young people with the help of their idols,” the official noted.

Zhang said he has long been enthusiastic about public welfare, and he tries to put aside time for public welfare activities whenever he is able. The young star made a donation on July 12 on behalf of his fans to set up libraries in nine primary schools around Hunan. He also has plans to make youth league posters to be put up on subways and school campuses, according to Hunan Daily.

The CYLC Central Committee has additionally invited popular Chinese boy band TFboys to become ambassadors for the organization, Global Times reported in March. In June 2015, the CYLC Central Committee invited TFboys and South Korea-trained singer Han Geng to cover “We are the Successors of Communism,” the official anthem of the CYLC.
