A father from eastern China's Jiangsu province, who was also known as “Eagle Dad” for being extremely strict about his son's education, recently established a home-school, hoping to foster child prodigies, Guangzhou Daily reported. Now 8 students are studying in his school at a monthly tuition of about 10,000 yuan ($1,505).
The pushy father named He Liesheng went viral for his “Eagle-style education”. Holding a philosophy of “people can show great potential after being placed in strong wind and waves”, he forced his son to run on the street of New York city when the temperature was minus 13 degrees Celsius. His son was also the youngest contestant in international sailing events.
He asked his son to drop out from school when he was 8 years old and started a home education, claiming the education of the schools to be “insufficient” and essentially a “waste of time”.
Now he has recruited 8 students from Shanghai and Guangdong who have been divided into three grades based on their ages. The 12 teachers are all experienced ones coming from either educational institutions or local elite schools.
Getting up at 5:30 am, the students will have 14 classes each day. In addition to regular curriculums such as Chinese, math and English, the home-school also offers various unusual courses. The students will learn military knowledge, play games, and do daily chores related to the classes. They are even required to learn cooking skills.
He didn't get too far into his home-school until the education proved to be effective for his first group of students. According to his education method, the students will finish elementary school within a year. The middle school and high school will take only three to four years, he said, adding that the students will be able to be recruited by elite universities at the age of 13.
After the media reported his home-school, about 40 people have applied for it.
Many experts have doubted his education method, but he replied that "I'll fly the plane and they'll just walk."
