Airports in Shanghai have tightened security checks after five people were injured in a blast at the Shanghai Pudong Airport on Sunday, The Paper has reported.

Security procedures at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport are being upgraded, while more passengers are required to open their luggage for checks. Passengers at Terminal 2 of the Shanghai Pudong International Airport are required to take off their shoes for checks as well.

"Almost every bag, even check-in bags, needs to be inspected. I have three pieces of luggage, and two of them were already checked," said a passenger surnamed Li at the Pudong airport.

Travellers are advised to arrive at the airports to check in at least two hours prior to departure and to make their way through airport security checks as soon as possible.

In addition, here are some tips that could help travellers pass through airport securities faster.

- Discard lighters and matches before arriving at the airport.

- Remove computers, cell phones, iPads, portable battery chargers and cameras from their cases in advance.

- Make sure that the total volume of cosmetics and other liquid products in carry-on luggage is less than 100 milliliters.
