He said: 'We were in the Republic of Congo in the rainforest. The main thing I was looking for was western lowland gorillas.

'These gorillas aren't used to visitors. They're still quite wild.

'That was an exhilarating experience.'

Burrard-Lucas is also pioneering the use of robot-mounted cameras, indispensable for getting up close to Africa's largest and fiercest creatures, including lions, rhinos and elephants.

The photographer revealed: 'Through my photography I have always tried to show things to people they haven't seen before.
