What would happen if a pig's cornea is transplanted into a human? The very first bioengineering cornea transplantation surgery was successfully performed in Sun Yat-Sen University in south China's Guangzhou on Feb. 25, 2016, according to the report from Nanfang Metropolis Daily.
A 14-year-old patient who was almost blind received the transplantation of a pig’s cornea. His vision reached 20/200 a week after the surgery. According to doctors, the teenager is expected to have 20/33 vision after complete recovery.
Professor Yuan Jin of Zhongshan Ophthalmology Center says that the success of this operation means that of the 5 million patients who suffer from corneal blindness, one third to a half of them can see the world again through this technology.
