A man was rescued from a high-voltage pylon in rainy East China's Jiangxi Province after he threatened to commit suicide because his wife refused to have a second child with him, media reported Sunday.

Zhang Guiping, 33, climbed the 40-meter tower in Lianhe village on the afternoon of January 13 and remained there for 16 hours following an argument with his wife over the matter.

Police braved rain and unusually cold weather Saturday night to clear trees for a safety net below and called the local utility to cut power to prepare for what turned into an overnight ordeal.

Zhang and his wife already have a 5-year-old son.

He had taken drastic measures because he was jealous that his neighbor had a second child, read the report.

Zhang also suffers from mental illness and is partially deaf, police said.

Zhang's wife and parents attempted to talk Zhang down from the pole.

His wife kept yelling. "Daddy, come back! Think of our baby!" read the report.

However, given the distance, rainy weather and his condition, Zhang did not hear his family's pleas, media reported.

During the harrowing ordeal the distraught man became visibly irritated and made dangerous motions.

Police remained on watch overnight and provided Zhang with food and water.

An exhausted Zhang finally agreed to come down around 8 am the next morning.

He has since been reunited with his family.
