Wang Yuren (C) receives an interview by Information Times in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, on August 7, 2015.

A girl from northeast China's Jilin Province, has sparked heated debate online after reportedly attempting suicide for failing to be awarded a first-class scholarship.

According to a report by Information Times, the 26-year-old Wang Yuren, a student from South China Normal University in Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province, sent an email message of her 'will' to her family saying she'll commit suicide by midnight on the day of her graduation commencement earlier in June.

She was later prevented from commiting suicide by local police in Guangzhou and a journalist from Information Times.

According to Wang, she received very unfair treatment during her application for a first-class scholarship earlier in April.

The school leaders accused her of owing tuition fees for two year, which make her not qualified for the scholarship according to rules.

However, earlier in 2011, the local authorities from her hometown had promised that they will pay all her tuition fees.

Wang felt that everyone on campus was talking about her and it was causing unbearable pressure, so she ran away from school and lost contact with her family.

She then found that her problems had become publicized on the internet and a lot netizens, unaware of the facts, were making personal attacks at her, which finally made her consider suicide.

Back in 2004, Wang became a role model to many after supporting her ill father's medical treatment as well as donating nearly 30 thousand yuan to assist 80 impoverished students in thier education, and she was later awarded with the moral title 'Touching Jilin'.
