Invalid emergency calls in Hebei, a northern province in China, totaled more than 10 million in 2015, said the province police.

Li Zhongliang, an official with the Hebei Provincial Public Security Department (HPPSD), said that with 36,000 emergency calls received every day, the total number of emergency calls in Hebei totaled 13.45 million in 2015.

However, only 3.36 million of those calls were valid. Among the invalid calls, some people even called to report the existence of zombies, he added.

According to Li, 28 percent of the total calls were classified as harassment—a greater percentage than the valid ones. Some inebriated callers used China's emergency number, 110, as a free listener; some people in bad moods try to use it as a hotline to discuss their problems; some even call in to harass the female operators.

In addition, many people make reports through the 110 emergency number that turn out to be false alarms.

On Jan. 10, designated as "110 Publicity Day" in China, Li called on the police department to crack down on such activities, since invalid emergency calls are a waste of public resources, in addition to causing great inconvenience to police officers.
