
Miao comb has a history of more than one thousand years and is an essential household item for women of Miao nationality. Miao people usually use different combs according to their costumes.
The exquisite patterns on the combs reflect the unique characteristics of Miao handicraft, which carries and records the historical memory of wars and migration of Miao People.
Yang Tongjie is an octogenarian in Yangpai village, Leishan county of southwest China's Guizhou province. He is also a master of making Miao combs.
Precise craft and over ten processes are crucial to turning a small piece of wood into a delicate comb. Miao combs used to be purely handcrafted. Now machinery is used in the production. But people still need to crave patterns, designs and paint colors on the combs. The family of Yang could make about 20 combs one day.
Yang Guangfu, 51, has been making combs for over 20 years. His son Yang Changkui went back to hometown after working outside. He opened a factory and ran a Taobao shop. The Miao combs are inherited and innovated in the family of Yang.
