A U.S. Navy destroyer, USS Stethem, docked in east China's Shanghai on Monday, a sign that shows the U.S. and Chinese militaries still maintain contacts even though tensions exist over the South China Sea issue.
"Sometimes countries might have some disagreements, yet our navies are able to operate safely at sea," said The Stethem's commanding officer, Cmdr. Harry Marsh.
The visit by the Arleigh-Burke class destroyer to Shanghai followed a stop in Qingdao, east China's Shandong province, from July 28 to 30, 2015. China and the U.S. are also planning a combined search and rescue exercise at sea.
