Over the past 8 years, Huang Qipeng, 82, a retired professor of Sun Yat-Sen University, has donated over 130,000 books to 251 primary schools in poor areas, which has cost him about 600,000 yuan. He could have had a restful retirement, however he chose to devote his remaining years to children in poverty. He said that he wants the children to have better schooling than he did.

"As a child, I encountered Japanese aggression when I was at school age," Huang Qipeng said. Not until the war was over when he was twelve could he return to school. "I know what school means to a child. So I decided to donate books."

In 2007, he shared his idea to his old classmates at a reunion and they all warmly responded. They set up a study-aiding team and their main work is to donate books to primary schools in poor areas in Hainan and Guangdong provinces.

In order to donate books, 82-year-old Huang Qipeng often travels between Guangzhou and Hainan. From choosing and buying to delivery, he does everything himself. And the books, transportation and accommodation are covered by him and his friends. He said frankly that most of his pension is spent on donating books, and he has invested about 600,000 yuan.

Much to Huang Qipeng's comfort, in these years, more and more people have joined their team. Even strangers will call him after seeing him in a newspaper and volunteer to donate books.
