Stanley Kwan was born in October 1957 in Hong Kong. He is one of the most distinguished film directors and producers in China. Kwan landed a job at TVB after receiving a mass communications degree at Hong Kong Baptist College.

Kwan's first film "Women" (1985), starring Chow Yun-fat, was a big box-office success. In 1998, his film "Hold You Tight" won the Alfred Bauer Prize and Teddy Award at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2005, his film "Everlasting Regret" won the Open Prize at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival.

In 1996, Kwan came out as gay in "Yang ± Yin", his documentary looking at the history of Chinese-language film through the prism of gender roles and sexuality. In 2001, he won Best Director at the 38th Taiwan Golden Horse Award for his gay-themed film "Lan Yu".

In 1989, Kwan met his partner William, and the two have maintained a relationship for more than 25 years.
