President Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan and the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama will pay a visit to the giant pandas at the National Zoological Park of the United States in Washington DC at around 10 a.m. local time on September 25, 2015, the White House has confirmed.
As one of the oldest zoos in the United States, the National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, has been the home to giant pandas for more than 40 years and is a leader in giant panda conservation, ever since giant pandas Hsing Hsing and Ling Ling arrived at the zoo in 1972.
Now the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat of the National Zoological Park is home to four giant pandas: Mei Xiang (adult female), Tian Tian (adult male), Bao Bao (juvenile female), and a male cub born on August 22, 2015.
Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are the most famous residents of the Giant Panda Habitat at the National Zoological Park. Both of them were born at the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan Province.
Mei Xiang and Tian Tian successfully had a male cub, named Tai Shan, in 2005. Tai Shan currently lives at the Bifengxia Panda Base in Sichuan, China, and is taking part in Bifengxia's breeding program.
On August 23, 2013, Mei Xiang gave birth to Bao Bao, who still resides at the zoo.
Mei Xiang delivered two cubs on August 22, 2015, but the smaller one died a few days later. Both cubs, fraternal twins, were fathered by Tian Tian. The surviving male is doing well, vocalizing well, and is being properly cared for by Mei Xiang and the staff, though it is still early days. He is as-yet unnamed, and is beginning to develop black spots on his still-pink skin.
A closure notice of the giant panda habitat and the surrounding areas on September 25, 2015 has been posted on the National Zoological Park's official website.
According to the schedule published by the White House, Peng Liyuan and Michelle Obama will both deliver speeches at the National Zoological Park.
