Beijing's transport authority will increase the public transport capacity and extend subway operation times to relieve traffic during the period of the odd-even traffic control, Beijing Youth Daily reported yesterday.
Earlier this month, the city's government announced that half of all cars will be banned from the road between Aug. 20 and Sept. 3 to ease traffic during the IAAF World athletics championships and the World War II victory parade.
During this time, cars with license plates ending with odd numbers will be allowed to hit the road on some days of the week, while vehicles with license plates ending in even numbers will be allowed to be driven on the remaining days of the week during the allotted time period.
In order to ensure commuters can get to their respective destinations on time, the local public transport companies will increase the public transport capacity by 2 percent through increasing the quantity and density of public buses and subways, allocating over 20,000 public buses to operate on the road during the traffic control period.
In addition, operation service hours of the subway will be extended by 30 minutes and temporary trains will be added to operation in case of large passenger flow during the ban period.
Strengthening the public transport equipment around the National Stadium, residential hotels and other key areas will also be a priority during this time period, according to the local transport department.
