A lady came all the way Friday to see a scheduled “Firefly Display” in Changsha, Central China’s Hunan province was very disappointed to know that the event was canceled, according to China News online.
The firefly display, which opened on August 7 but was cancelled only two days after its opening by local government agencies due to a petition from the wildlife conservationists. They warned in their “open letter” to the organizers that the display could lead to ecological damage and cause safety issues.
This was not the first firefly-theme park that was suspended. Earlier, similar events in China’s coast cities such as Hang Zhou, Shanghai, Qingdao were also suspended for the same reason.
The conservationists called on people in their open letter not to go and see firefly display to protect ecological balance, accusing the organizers of illegal capturing wild species and damage the environment.
Fireflies were once a familiar part of summer evenings in much of China. But the tiny flashes that used to light up fields have dwindled — lost, experts say, to pollution and to altered natural habitats. Commercial use of fireflies will cause loss of the species and that way whey they called for a halt to this kind of display.
It is reported that China is home to about 200 species of fireflies, but their numbers are rapidly declining.
In addition to habitat loss, the insects have been hit hard by artificial light from buildings and motor vehicles, which is believed to disrupt the signals they use for communications and mating.
