Fun facts: China and Olympic Winter Games (3)

The host city of 2022 Winter Olympics will be announced this evening. Until now there are only two candidate cities, one is Almaty of Kazakhstan, the other is China's capital Beijing.

In fact, China participated in the Olympic Winter Games as early as 1980.

1. The first time China participated in Winter Olympics

The 13th Olympic Winter Games was held in Lake Placid of United States in 1980. China sent 28 athletes to participate in 18 individual events, including ice skating, skiing etc.

2. The first time that China's cross-strait athletes took part in the competition hand in hand

The 14th Olympic Winter Games was held in Sarajevo of Yugoslavia in 1984. It was worth mentioning that 14 athletes of China's Taipei team participated in this event. And this was also the first time that China's cross-strait athletes took part in the competition hand in hand.

3. The first medal China won

China's athletes won three silver medals in the 16th Olympic Winter Games, which was held in Albertville of France in 1992.

4. The first gold medal 

Yang Yang became the first athlete who won China's first gold medal in short track speed skating. People witnessed this glorious moment in the 19th Olympic Winter Games, which was held in Salt Lake City of United States in 2002.

5. China's first bid

Harbin of NE China's Heilongjiang Province bid for hosting Winter Olympics Games in 2010. Even though failed, it has accumulated rich experience.
