A lesbian college graduate announced Saturday at the graduation ceremony her sex orientation and was hugged by the university president.Wearing a rainbow flag on her shoulder, Wan Qing, 22, a graduate from Sun Yat-sen University in China’s southern city Guangzhou, announced to her president Luo Jun at the graduation ceremony that she is a lesbian and asked him to show support.
“ Can you join me to pose a victory gesture to show support?” she surprised the president who then hugged her, winning cheering applauds from the crowds at the scene.
Later in the evening, she wrote on her weibo(Chinese style twitter) that she hoped “same-sex marriage will be the beginning of an equal rights movement and minority’s sex orientation can be respected.
“Same sex marriage is still not legal in China. But most Chinese are more tolerant to gays and lesbians。 Some of the gays and lesbian couples even chose to hold wedding ceremonies to push for social awareness and respect.
