China calls for the U.S. to abandon the cold war mentality, welcome its progress and success, correctly view and get used to its development and seek opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation instead of pinning hope on containing China.

Zheng Zeguang, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister made the comments at the 13th Lanting Forum held by the Foreign Ministry of China.

China and the U.S. have established diplomatic ties for 36 years. The development of their ties corresponds to the trend of the era, conforms to the fundamental interests of the two sides, and is also the common aspiration of the two peoples, said Zheng.

He said that there are some divergences between China and the U.S., such as disputes on maritime issues, cyber security and human rights. China will face up to these problems and firmly safeguard its interests. At the same time, China will help enhance mutual trust and remove misgivings of the U.S. and manage these issues in a constructive way.

Zheng said that China will carefully implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries. China will enhance mutual trust, avoid strategic miscalculation, control disputes, expand cooperation and exchange in broad areas.
