In September of this year, President Xi Jinping will pay his first state visit to the United State since he assumed the presidency. The fact that both countries revealed the news publicly 7 months prior to the visit shows the emphasis on the visit and the expectations of success. For academics paying great attention to the relationship between China and US, solid research should be done on vital issues about the two countries.
Of all the problems that need to be considered, here are several points that need particular attention:
First of all, effective communication is required between China and the US. From the current perspective, once China and US have a divergence of interests, both have to take a stance, and neither side is willing to cede to the other. As a result, clarity is required to make policies and strategic intentions more apparent to each side, and to increase the effectiveness of dialogue between the two countries. And in addition to their bilateral problems, China and the US should also engage in more effective dialogue on regional and international problems, reducing misunderstandings and miscalculation.
In the meantime, the citizenry of both countries should play a greter part in these conversations. The understanding and support of the public is of great importance for driving such dialogue to a deeper level and stabilizing policies on both sides.
Second, to avoid provocative outbursts and behavior, it is necessary to think carefully about the management of sensitive issues. As the Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said, it is not helpful to have CNN journalists on board US navy P-8A patrol aircraft taking photos of China's construction work on the Nansha islands. People should realize how such "brinkmanship" can endanger the relationship between China and the US.
