UNITED NATIONS, June 25 -- Various activities will be held in San Francisco and also at UN headquarters here in New York on Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter, said a UN spokesman Thursday at a daily news briefing.
The Secretary-General will be in San Francisco Friday to take part in events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter. The events in San Francisco, will also feature remarks from the President of the General Assembly, Sam Kutesa, the Governor of California, Edmund G. Brown Jr., the Mayor of San Francisco, Edwin M. Lee, and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the secretary-general.
At UN headquarters, a special event and the launch of the anniversary edition of the UN Charter will be held Friday afternoon. UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson will deliver opening remarks, according to UN website.
In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the UN Conference on International Organization to draw up the charter, which was signed on June 26, 1945 at the conclusion of the conference and came into force on Oct. 24 of the same year.
The charter had been ratified by China, France, the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of its original signatories. United Nations Day is celebrated on Oct. 24 each year.
