Johannesburg, June 7 (People’s Daily Online) — South African and Chinese Cross-Culture Exhibition kicked off at Workers Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday. Around 40 pieces of art works of 12 artists from the two countries were showcased, some of which were produced by local South African artists based on their experience in China, showing different artistic and aesthetic perceptions of life in China from an African perspective.

“We have a shared history which should be recognized. We are also concerned to build a shared future, which is enriched by arts and culture.” said Eric Itzkin, the Acting Director of Arts, Culture & Heritage Department of Johannesburg.

Chinese immigrants began arriving in South Africa in the late 1800s. In Johannesburg, the first Chinese community began around 1891 with the arrival of Chinese traders up the road from the Johannesburg New Town neighborhood, which was just around the venue of this exhibition.
