Nuogan, one of a few pristine ancient Dai nationality villages that have survived to this day, is a place people love and long to set foot on thanks to its pristine Dai nationality residences that have remained fairly intact.
"Nuogan" is a word of Dai language meaning "a place where deer come to drink water." It is said that a large herd of deer frequently came here to drink water because the forest was extremely dense; the brook water here was very clear and sweet, and the surrounding high green mountains made this place look extremely tranquil and safe. The ancestors of the Dai people found this heavenly plot of land amid the mountains and began to live and multiply here.
Surrounded by mountains and waters, Nuogan still retains the flavor of a cluster of pristine ancient buildings. Most of the residences exist as Diaojiao buildings. It is rainy and wet here and the forest ecology is nice, meaning there is a large number of wild animals. People live upstairs only to avoid the moisture and the animals but store miscellaneous things and keep livestock and poultry downstairs. Forming a courtyard by itself, the Dai Diaojiao building uses its fence as the wall of the courtyard, in which some flowers and fruit trees may be planted to make the entire place more beautiful. It is a very comfortable kind of residence in subtropical regions.
Meeting you as you walk down the village's flagstone paths, the Dai people, who are very kind and gentle, will surely invite you to their house for a cup of tea. You can get a full view of the entire village by ascending to the viewing deck on the slope near the village. Dating from ancient times, this Dai village has a group of ancient houses that are placed one against another in a tight yet well-arranged manner, a typical Southern Buddhism temple, and a simple yet unique landscape of waters and mountains.
People in Nuogan enjoy long life, sometimes as long as 100 years, therefore the village is called a "longevity village." This may be because its environment is very suitable for human living thanks to the superb surroundings and nice air or because quality Pu'er tea abounds here and people drink tea every day.
Nuogan is the Dai village with the largest number of unique features. It is among those villages in Jingmai and Mangjing Scenic Spots deemed imbued with national cultures and features. It is a perfect place where you can experience the pristine culture and tradition of the Dai people to the full or cultivate your moral character.
