Smallpox is an acute infectious disease, and is also the only infectious disease that has been globally eradicated by humans. It is believed that smallpox was found as early as 1156 BC in ancient Egypt. The disease killed millions of people and caused blindness in millions of others before global vaccination campaigns throughout the 19th and 20th centuries led to its elimination.
