BEIJING, August 29 (People’s Daily Online) - China has always been there to offer support to South Sudan even in times of challenges, said Marial Benjamin, foreign minister of S. Sudan on Wednesday.
"Some ‘friends’ see you when you are healthy but don’t see you when you are sick, but China has always been there even when S. Sudan faces challenges," Mr. Benjamin told People’s Daily Online.
The two countries have founded a solid foundation and have always maintained good terms with each other, Mr. Benjamin noted. As one of the earliest countries to recognize the outcome of the referendum in Southern Sudan, China has been offering S. Sudan humanitarian assistance. The two countries have carried out economic cooperation in the fields such as oil industry and infrastructure construction. Besides, China offers governmental scholarship and chances to study in China for S. Sudan’s students.
China National Petroleum Corporation has invested in S. Sudan, which has abundant oil, to help the country develop its oil industry. Mr. Benjamin pointed out that its oil industry development increases its revenues. S. Sudan looks forward to expanding cooperation with China for other natural resources such ashydroenergy, minerals and wildlife, he added.
Impressed by China’s rapid economic development, he said that S. Sudan would be committed to peace and hopes to realize economic development via learning from China’s experiences in future.
Mr. Benjamin visits China from Aug. 18 to 22 at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
