According to Pu'er Daily, forestry workers of Pu'er City, using an infrared camera, captured the green peacock in the open country of Jinggu County, a discovery that took them over 20 years to make. According to a preliminary investigation, there are about a dozen green peacocks in the area.
The green peacock dwells mainly in tropical and subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests and hybrid forests that are at least 2,000 meters below sea level. The green peacock used to be seen from time to time in many autonomous prefectures and cities of Yunnan Province, but has verged on extinction due to poaching, environmental damage, and other reasons.
Since 1992, the Forestry Bureau of Pu'er City has launched an effort to search for the wild green peacock. It started a program to monitor the green peacock in the open country early this year. The forestry workers used the infrared camera to capture precious video footage of the green peacock.
