Sri Lankan Tamil Rebels Attack Govt Troop Carrier

Sri Lankan separatist Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a ship carrying more than 1,200 government troops on Sunday in the northern Jaffna peninsula of the country, military officials said.

Military spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said that more than 20 boats of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) launched attacks against a vessel named "The Pride of the South" carrying government soldiers near the northern port of Point Pedro.

He said two LTTE rebel boats were destroyed when the first attack was repulsed. The air force and naval units have moved in and fighting was still going on, he added.

The soldiers were on their way from Trincomallee to the port of Point Pedro. The casualties were not known yet, he said.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces since 1983 in the north and east of the country to establish an independent Tamil homeland there. More than 64,000 people have been killed in the bloody war.
