Sri Lankan Tamil Rebel Suicide Bomber Blasts Boat

A separatist Tamil Tiger suicide bomber blasted himself and destroyed a fishing boat he was onboard to avoid capture by navy in northern Sri Lanka, the Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry said that the navy patrol craft had apprehended 12 fishing boats while they were fishing in an unauthorized area which is secured as the flight path of the main military airport in Jaffna peninsula on Saturday.

The boat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels among the fishing boats exploded when the navy was escorting the fishermen to shore, killing one person and wounding two others.

The ministry said all 42 fishermen in the group were arrested and have been handed over to police for interrogation as LTTE rebels have come disguised as fishermen.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces since 1983 in the north and east of the country to establish an independent Tamil homeland there. More than 64,000 people have been killed in the bloody war.
