Chinese Province to Encourage Use of Sea Water

To solve water shortages, Shandong Province in east China will draw up policies to encourage the use of sea water.

Officials from the Shandong Provincial Construction Department said the province will add the use of sea water to urban planning for coastal cities.

Like many Chinese regions, Shandong is inflicted by a worsening water shortage, but its 3,024 kilometers of coastline offer a solution of desalinating the sea water.

Now, about 20 enterprises in the province now consume a total of one billion cubic meters of sea water a year.

According to experts, China currently utilizes 12 billion cubic meters of sea water a year, one eighth of that used by the United States, or one 23rd of that used by Japan.
