Japan Airlines Computer Crash Delays Int'l Flights Out of Japan
Japan Airlines' computer system for bookings and issuing boarding passes failed Thursday morning, causing delays of more than two hour for international flights out of Japan.
Computers were down from 7:30 a.m. until noon, delaying a total of 39 overseas flights from Tokyo's international airport at Narita and Kansai International Airport in Osaka. Domestic flights were also delayed. Internet bookings were not affected, the company said.
An estimated 11,600 customers were affected, airline spokeswoman Yumi Ishiwata said.
JAL, Japan's largest airline, was apparently the only one affected by the computer trouble. Japan's other major carriers, All Nippon Airways and Japan Air System, said they had not experienced any computer problems Thursday.
Japan Airlines spokesman Takeshi Suzuki said officials were still investigating the cause of the problem, and could not say if it was related to the viruslike Code Red II computer worm affecting computers in the United States.
