US Warplane Might Be Hit: Iraq

The Iraqi air defense force might have hit a United States warplane coming from Turkish airspace on Monday, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

"Evidence showed that our force has probably succeeded in hitting one of the hostile warplanes violating our airspace," the Iraqi News Agency quoted the spokesman of the Air Defense Command as saying.

US and British warplanes, coming from Turkey, intruded the Iraqi airspace and made 18 sorties over the provinces of Dahouk, Arbil and Ninawa, said the spokesman, noting that the Iraqi defense force defied the planes and probably hit one of them.

The other hostile planes fled into Turkey, he added.

US and British warplanes are patrolling two so-called "no-fly zones" in northern and southern Iraq, imposed in 1991 by the Western allies, to allegedly protect the Kurds and Shiite Muslims from attacks by Iraqi government troops.
