Tamil Tigers Attack Air Force Base Near Colombo

Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a major air force base near Colombo early Tuesday, firing mortar shells into the area, according to a Defense Ministry spokesman.

"We are resisting the attacks," said the spokesman, adding he had no further information.

Sri Lanka's only international airport, which is next to the air base, has been closed down. The airport is about 30 kilometers north of the country's capital, Colombo.

Tamil Tiger rebels have been fighting since 1983 for separation in Sri Lanka's north and east, costing about 64,000 people ever since.
