Arafat Urges UN to Send Observers to Palestinian Territories

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Wednesday urged the United Nations Security Council to immediately send international observers to the Palestinian territories to put an end to Israeli aggressions.

Arafat made the call in a letter, read by Palestine National Council Chairman Salem Zanoun at the opening session of the 39th emergency meeting of the Council of the Arab Parliamentary Union (APUŁ©in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

The holding of the meeting is a clear message from the Arab world to the international community, especially the U.N. Security Council and General Assembly to halt the Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian people, Arafat stressed.

Arafat spoke highly of Yemen's stands on the Palestinian issue and expressed appreciation for its support for the Palestinian struggles against Israeli occupation. He also stressed the continuation of the struggles in order to create an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as the capital.

Arafat called for the immediate implementation of the recommendations of the Mitchell report, notably a freeze of Israeli settlement activities and the resumption of peace talks.

The two-day APU council meeting will discuss the latest developments of the Middle East situation, with the top priority given to ways of supporting the Palestinian uprising aimed at attaining the Palestinian legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent state.
