PNA to Implement New Policies to Prevent Attacks Against Israel: Peres
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has informed Israel and the United States that the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) will begin implementing new policies this week to prevent attacks against Israel, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said on Monday.
Peres told a Labor faction meeting at the Knesset (parliament) that Arafat called a meeting Saturday evening, which decided to undertake "serious" measures to restore calm on the ground, including arresting Palestinian terrorists, preventing them from entering into Israel and implementing ceasefire orders.
The results of the new measures would be seen in the middle of the week, Peres said, adding that now it is time for Israel to stop efforts to delegitimize Arafat.
Peres said that Arafat has also informed U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet of the decision. Tenet succeed in persuading the Palestinians and Israelis to accept the U.S.-brokered ceasefire during his six-day diplomatic shuttle between the two sides last month.
But since the ceasefire took effect on June 13, the Israeli- palestinian conflict has been still raging and at least 20 Palestinians and 10 Israelis have been killed.
Peres also defended his meeting with Arafat on June 29 in Lisbon, Portugal, saying that the meeting helped improve relations between Israel and the Arab world.
