Chinese Ambassador Becomes New President of Security Council for July
Wang Yingfan, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, succeeded Anwarul Chowdhury of Bangladesh as president of the UN Security Council as of July 1.
The new president Monday presided over the closed-door council consultations on the Iraqi issue, which, known as the "Oil for Food" program, is expected to top the agenda of the council in July.
The council presidency changes monthly according to the principle of alphabetical rotation among 15 members. China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
Under the U.N. Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace and security in the world at large.
