Macedonia Recognises People's Republic of China

The Macedonian government on Tuesday decided to officially recognise People's Republic of China, a move which will automatically end its "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan, government spokesman Antonio Milososki said.

"The government decided to normalise relations between Macedonia and China. This decision means there will be consquences on our relations with Taiwan," said Milososki.

He said no date had yet been set for a signing ceremony with a Chinese representative.

Macedonia established ties with Taipei in January 1999. Critics of the move -- made without notifying then president Kiro Gligorov -- said it would alienate Macedonia from China, which is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Macedonia is currently being rocked by an ethnic Albanian rebellion which threatens to rip the multi-ethnic state apart.
