UNITA's Stronghold in Central Angola Recaptured by Govt.Troops

The Angolan government troops have recaptured the town of Cayave, a long-term rebel stronghold in the coastal province of Benguela, after "fierce" combat against the forces of the rebel National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the official news agency Angop reported on Thursday.

A government military source was quoted as saying that Cayave, which has been under control of the UNITA rebels over the past five years, was liberated several days ago.

But the source did not mention the number of the casualties during the fierce battles.

According to the source, the recapture of Cayave will pave the way for rehabilitating the railway from Gatengue to Cubal, both located in the Benguela province.

In addition, Cayave is of great economic importance mainly due to its agricultural potentiality. The small town is famous for the production of oranges and an industry of natural fruit juice.
