Russia to Sell New High-Speed Missile Warships

Russia will put a new type of "naval fighters" -- high-speed missile boats Katran -- on the world arms market soon, a source in the Russian Navy headquarters said Monday.

The Katran, created by the Almaz design bureau, is designed for missile strikes against enemy battleships and cargo vessels in coastal areas, as well as for the repulsion of landing operations and attacks on ships in the open sea, the Itar-Tass news agency cited the source as saying.

The boat is built with the use of state-of-the-art Stealth technologies. Its missile complex Uran-A has eight surface-to- surface missiles with a combat range of up to 130 kilometers. The missiles are practically invisible for naval missile defense systems as they approach a target flying at a height of just three to five meters above the water.

The Katran is the only missile boat in the world capable of delivering a simultaneous missile strike at six moving targets at once.

A successful attack by the Egyptian missile boat Komar, Katran' s predecessor, which drowned the Israeli destroyer Ayalat in October 1967, boosted the development of a torpedo boat fleet in many countries, the source said.
