New Airport to Open Soon in Southwest China

The Mianyang Nanjiao Airport, the nearest civilian airport to Jiuzhaigou, a World Natural Heritage site, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will be put into operation on April 28.

The construction of the airport in Mianyang, Sichuan Province in southwest China, was started in 1997 and costs 899 million yuan, airport officials said.

The airport is near to Jiuzhaigou, one of the most popular tourist attractions in China. The distance is also 150 kilometers less than that from the Shuangliu Airport in the provincial capital Chengdu, used by most tourists currently.

The Mianyang Airport will also be used as a backup to the Shuangliu Airport, the officials said.
