Export Processing Zone Operational in South China

The export processing zone in Shenzhen, a special economic zone in south China's Guangdong Province, has passed the inspection by national authorities required for official recognition.

Song Hai, vice-mayor of Shenzhen, received the passing grade approval from Zhao Guanghua, deputy director of the General Administration of Customs, Saturday, marking the zone's formal operation.

The Shenzhen Export Processing Zone covers an area of three square kilometers and is the largest among all 15 export processing zones in China.

It will focus on electronic information, precision machinery, bioengineering and medicine, and new material industries, officials said.

Six big firms from Japan, the United States, Israel and Taiwan have agreed to invest a total of 500 million U.S. dollars in the zone, the officials added.
