Tertiary Industry, New Boom in Tibetan Economy

Tibet's tertiary industry witnessed a sound development and became the major drive of economic growth last year, according to the autonomous statistical bureau. The data indicate that the added value of the tertiary industry last year amounted to 5.38 bn yuan in this region, accounting for 46.2 percent in GDP and a rise of 12.2 percent, much higher than the first and secondary industries.

The fast growth of the tertiary industry results from implementation of giving rein to domestic needs and stimulating consumption. With the ceaseless optimization of the interior structure the development of the tertiary industry in Tibet has seen a quick improvement, providing job vacancies for more people. As pillar industry tourism has hosted 550 thousand arrivals from both at home and abroad, benefiting 630 million yuan, a rise of 22 and 11 percent respectively. The import & export earnings were as estimated to have reached US $130, up 30.2 percent in export. Post and telecomm business saw an increase of 3.3 over last year, and 9.5 percent rising in terms of retail business.

Comparing to that in 1995, the Tibet's GDP last year may probably have reached a total of 11.65 bn yuan, an increase by one-fold over that in 1995, while tertiary industry alone increased by three times. The ratio of the first, secondary and tertiary industries stood from previous 41.9:23.8:34.3 to 30.7:23.1:46.2. Of these changes, the tertiary industry saw an increase of 11.9 percentage points.
