Israel's Sharon Takes over Power as Prime MinisterIsraeli new Prime Minister Ariel Sharon took over power from former Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday and praised Barak for his efforts for and contributions to the country.Speaking at the handover ceremony, Sharon said that after he won the prime ministerial election on February 6, he "really wanted" to work with Barak who he said had a combination of special talents, referring to the fact he had invited Barak to serve as defense minister in his government. Sharon said that he would "cooperate closely with" all different political factions in a bid to enhance national unity and reconciliation and to meet challenges ahead. He expressed belief that there would only be a "short honeymoon" before he undertakes the tasks facing him. Barak, who has said that he would serve as "a reservist in the service of the nation," voiced gratitude to all those who had worked with him during his tenure of office from July 1999. He said that Sharon has the "best background one could imagine" in both political and military experiences and now takes the responsibility at the pinnacle of the nation. Barak, who has resigned from politics, wished Sharon success and believed that Israel would stand fast amongst all challenges. Sharon, together with 25 cabinet ministers, was sworn in on Wednesday.
