Shanxi Initiates Major Agricultural Project

The provincial government of north China's Shanxi Province Friday initiated a special agricultural project featuring livestock breeding, greenhouse vegetables, fruits, and food grains other than wheat and rice.

The project is a priority one in the province's eight major projects for the Tenth Five-Year Plan Period (2001-2005), Fan Duixiang, deputy governor of the province, told a press conference.

Meanwhile, the province will carry out scientific and technological research and development programs in the fields of breeding, storage and fresh-storage.

With a complex climatic and geographical environment, the province has begun to develop special programs in recent years, to provide more competitive agricultural products to the market.

Shanxi intends to develop 670,000 hectares of arable land for growing cash plants.
