In a preemptive move, the Bush administration is warning Israel not to attempt to reoccupy territory controlled by Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority as a means of trying to curb five-month long violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that Israeli military and civilian officials have concluded that the situation is no longer tenable and they will have to do something about it soon. Among options being discussed is the possibility of reoccupying territory controlled by Yasser Arafat's Palestinian National Authority.
"We've seen the report," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Thursday. "Obviously, we oppose actions that might exacerbate the situation."
"Is it a real idea that somebody has? I don't know," Boucher said.
