Zhejiang Shuts Down Small Cement Plants, Rolling Mills
In an attempt to wipe out small, low-efficiency cement mills, east China's Zhejiang Province has got rid of 162 such plants over the past two years, reducing inefficient production by seven million tons per year.
At the same time, the province has introduced over 20 modern high-tech cement production lines, greatly raising the industry's competitiveness, local sources said.
The sources said that last year the cement industry in Zhejiang raked in a total profit of 200 million yuan (about 24 million U.S. dollars), a record for the previous five years.
Last year, the province also closed down 26 steel-making furnaces, including 20 destroyed permanently. The close-down helped make the industry better structured, according to the sources.
