Shanghai Shoots for 12 Percent Industrial Growth in 2001

Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial city, aspires to achieve a 12 percent increase in total industrial output value this year, following 10 consecutive years of double-digit growth.

The city also aims to realize increases of over 15 percent in both industrial profits and exports his year, said an official in charge of local economic affairs.

Statistics show that Shanghai's industrial enterprises reported an increase of 10.5 percent in terms of industrial added value in 2000, and a 13.5 percent increase in total industrial output value. Industrial profits rose by 44 percent last year.

The official said that to achieve fast industrial growth in the new century, top priority will be given to the development of electronic information, bio-medicine, petro-chemicals and the iron and steel industries.

The city also will work harder to realize rapid development of information technology and greatly promote technical innovations inside industrial enterprises.
