Nearly Half Varieties of Fishes Sold in Taiwan Markets Found Contaminated
Nearly half the varieties of fishes sold in Taiwan's markets were found contaminated, containing dangerous levels of pesticide residues, according to Taiwanese newspaper Taiwan News Sunday, December 24.
The paper cited the results of a recent survey as saying 14 of 30 types of fish commonly available at markets in Taiwan were found to contain pesticide residues and persistent organic pollutants.
These included fire-mouth fish, perch, red chub, hair-tail fish, mackerel, salmon, milkfish, yellow herring, scomber fish, golden threats and tigerfish, it said.
Persistent organic pollutants, according to the UN Environment Program, are highly toxic and can cause death, disease and birth defects in humans and animals, the newspaper said.
