DPRK Proposes Diplomatic Ties with EU Countries

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has expressed its official intention to establish diplomatic ties with European Union (EU) countries, the Korean Central News Agency said Thursday.

In a recent letter sent to his counterparts of EU countries, DPRK Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun said his country is willing to establish diplomatic relations with the EU and its member states under the principle of mutual benefit, and expand cooperation with them in politics, economy, culture and other fields.

He said that his country is willing to establish and develop friendly and cooperative relations with all countries and international organizations, including the United Nations, under the principles of mutual respect of independence, non-intervention in internal affairs and equality and mutual benefit.

The establishment and development of such relations will be conducive to the complete resolution of the problems left behind by the Cold War, and to peace and security in Northeast Asia and the world at large, he added.

His letter was sent to his counterparts of Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, and the external relations commissioner of the European Commission, the executive body of the EU.
