Exhibition Highlights Western Regions

A 13-day exhibition highlighting China's western regions opened Tuesday in the Forbidden City of Beijing, China Daily reported Wednesday.

The "2000 China Western Development Culture and Economic Exhibition Week" was sponsored by the State Bureau of Culture Relics, the Ministry of Culture and the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang.

According to the newspaper, the exhibition is designed to teach more people about the history of western China, which has a population of about 300 million and covers about 56 percent of China's territory.

If people knows more about the culture of this area, they will pay more attention to its economic development, the daily said.

China has launched a large-scale campaign to develop its central and western regions since late last year, aiming at narrowing the economic gap between its relatively developed east and underdeveloped west. The exhibition has provided a venue for local leaders from these western provinces to reveal their development plans, said the paper.
