Guangzhou Residents Earn More, Spend More

A sample survey shows that the per capita disposable income of residents in Guangzhou, China's southern gate to the outside world, was 1,093.34 yuan in July, up 18.7 percent from July of 1999.

The sample survey, which was done by Guangzhou Urban Investigation Team, also disclosed that the per capita consumption expenditure of local residents in July totaled 888.6 yuan, up 18.5 percent from the same month last year.

According to the survey, most of the income went for food, apparel, home appliances and domestic services, medical care, transportation and telecommunications, entertainment services, education and other sundry commodities and services. But expenditures on housing was dropping.

Expenditures in telecommunications and transportation was increasing fast. The number of mobile phones purchased by local residents went up by 71 percent according to comparable statistics from 1999 and telecommunications service charges also rose by 46.2 percent. Local residents spent 23.3 percent more on transportation in July than it did in the same month last year.
